Rocker arm cover question

I replaced the rocker arm cover gasket and its stud seals on a '63 2000 4 cylinder gas. When I started it up a rocker arm is hitting the cover and the new gasket is leaking along the front of the right side.I'm thinking of loosening the stud nuts, starting the engine, and repositioning the cover until the tapping noise stops and tightening it up there. Is there a better way?Am I about to really mess up?Thanks,Boley

I'm learning too jr150.The front oil tube on mine is tightly in place, the rear one moves up and down quite a bit, both have clamps on the rocker arm shaft bolts that look the same.My engine was quiet running but leaked a lot before the rocker arm cover gasket was replaced.I never touched the rocker arms or the oil tubes when replacing the gasket.Somehow, changing the gasket and stud seals resulted in the rear oil tube contacting the cover. There was a little sludge in the cover which was cleaned out,but I doubt that accounted for the new tapping noise.Good luck with your tractor.Boley

Three questions - remember I can't see the issue from here, so they are pretty basic.

1) is the cover on the right way or reversed? Breather is away from the muffler...

2) did you over torque the nuts and distort the cover? The Ford book spec is rediculously low. 1 1/4 to 2 in-lb. That's inch pounds!

3) is the gasket real thick? It should be.

Thanks for the reply john bud.As it turned out the rear oil tube was making the noise.I'm not sure whats going on with it moving up and down.Everything is oiling well,I ran it at idle with the rocker cover off.My fix was something Henry Ford wouldn't approve,I ty wrapped a 1 inch piece of high temperature rubber hose on the oil tube where it was making contact with the cover.I moved the cover around with the engine running till the leaks stopped.Ran it a hour or so,so I think I'm good to go at least until part of the hose finds its way to the oil pump.Boley

The original item that was supposed to anchor the oil tube down as well as seal it at the bottom so the top end would get the full charge of oil it needed, was a square (in cross section) o'ring. I understand that Ford eventually came out with a kit that mounts under a rocker support bolt(?) to help hold it in place. You might want to buy this kit from NH but I would recommend that you still use the FACTORY-type o'ring at the bottom of the tube to help anchor the tube as well as provide a good seal.
