Just bought a ford 860 and was out using for about a half hour and it fell off like out of gas - then cought itself, but ran real rough and choked around for a few minutes - then ran fine for a while and repeated the process. Full of gas. Ideas?

You may have a sticking float needle. Check the float and make sure the needle is attached to the carb float with a small spring clip. A aftermarket carb rebuilt kit I had did not have this little spring as the carb fuel level was getting lower in the carb the float was sinking but the needle was stuck in the seat area. Try tapping on the side of the carb, if this helps it should be the problem. Also great advice obove or below.

I had the same symptoms on my 860 until I re-routed the fuel lines away from heat sources. They seem to vapor lock real easy.

Any sign of water in the gas?

860:

I agree with Old. Though there are other problems that could cause your symptoms, this sounds like the often blamed but rather rarely seen dirt or water in the carb.

Check out your entire fuel system. Make sure all of the lines flow fuel well. Make sure the sediment bowl is clean, make sure the tank does not have alot of crud in it. If it continues remove the fuel line bolt on the carb and make sure that it's not obstructed if it is clean it and ream the fuel flow holes in the side of the bolt.

Don't forget the filter screen that is attached to the fuel shut off valve in the bottom of the tank. It is a fine mesh screen.

Dirt in the carb will do that. What happens if you pull the choke when it does that. If it runs better then its dirt in the main jet area
