Okay, I'm pretty embarrased as I type this. But I owe all of you who read this thread an apology for wasting your time.

After thinking about the problem from all angles, an obvious answer came to me: drain the cooling system when the tractor will sit idle for a few days or more and let the accumualted coolant drip out of the bell housing (as it does, slowly).

This should keep the coolant level in the bell housing nice and low and thus minimize damage. At the same time it will allow me to monitor and grow famliar with the leak, so If I see a sudden change in leak behavior I can have the tractor split and try again.

Next time maybe I'll have them coat the mating edge of the hole and plug with JB Weld...after all, third try's a charm as long as one is trying NEW approaches!

souNdguy: I gather from your handle you are in the re-enforcement biz?

I used to work as an audio engineer in Austin, Texas. One of my jobs was running and maintaining a large public address system in the Capitol building that used a bank of push-pull 6L6s. In addition to the twenty or so speakers on the House floor it ran another twenty or so monitor speakers throughout the building on a 70-volt line.

It all went for scrap years ago. What I wouldn't give to have all those audio and power transformers now!

I always used permatex on soft plugs in my dealership days. Only one I ever had a problem with was my own 4000.

A semar of hitemp rtv on a freeze plug has always worked for me.

A pesky 'single drip' leak might be fixed with some mechanic in a bottle.

Though I don't care forr them as much.. a bottle of aluma seal.. or the CNH cooling system sealant may be worth the 2$ or 4$ just to try..
Follow directions.. add then warm up and circulate.
