I have a 1953 NAA. I want to change the oil in the transmission and rear end. The dealer says the transmission takes 5 quarts, and the rear takes 10 quarts, both of 134 hydraulic/transmission fluid. There are three fill plugs on the tractor though. One by the gear shift, one under the seat on the left, and one behind the seat. What goes in each fill plug and how much is correct? thank you,
Josh

On my 1954 NAA Rustbucket, I used stock spec 90w mineral oil in the transmission and differential housings. The center hydraulic chamber got the New Holland spec 134d. Word of caution here, your seals between the transmission and hydraulic chambers (transmission output shaft and PTO shifter seals), and the seal between the differential and hydraulic chamber (PTO shaft seal) needs to be in decent shape or they will leak through and mix (still not the end of the world if it does). If your seals are bad, you "could" just put the NH spec 134d in all three chambers so it doesn't matter if it mixes, but the 134d is a 10w oil and that is too thin for a gear oil IMO - I don't care what New Holland or anybody says. Your call here. But, 90w mineral oil is too thick really for the hydraulics. If you want to see the seals I am talking about, click on my website below and got to the Rustbucket link.

You need 5 quarts in the transmission (the filler plug by the shifter), 8 quarts in the hydraulic chamber (filler plug under the seat to the left), and 8.5 quarts in the differential (filler plug behind the seat on the right).

HTH and good luck,
Dan

Do you live in Leander, TX? I saw the RR tracks in the background of some of Rustbucket's restoration photos and I've noticed a nice Ford tractor sitting across the tracks as I drive down Hwy 183.

I live in Garland (and that is where most of the work was done). My Father-in-Law has a well stocked shop in Saginaw and that is where the sandblasting and painting was done (by the tracks). Rustbucket is now at my place in Bonham.

My quick reference at works says 6 qts for 4 sp, 8 qts for hyds and 8 qts for rear axle. They recommend 134 or equivalent in all. Do use 134 or UTF in hyd but can use 80w-90 in trans and rear axle.
