Greetings! I am going to go look at an old 801-series tractor. I am in need of a front loader, and do not want to burden my little 8N mowing machine with a heavy rig like that. The tractor I am going to go look at can be seen in these pics:

The asking price is $4300. Can anyone help me with advice on what to look for? Thanks!

Very nice looking tractor.
At $4300 it is a fair to good price. That loader is worth close to 2k just by it self and I can see the power steering cylinder. I feel the owner has priced the tractor well because it has the SOS trans. They are harder to sell because so many are scared of them.

The 2 things I would check is the front end and the trans.

That loader is hard on a 801 front end. Pick up the fronet end with the loader and check all spots for wear or looseness. Check for any welds from repairs of broken parts.

Take some time and check out the trans. Get it good and hot by driving it in all gears for 45 to 60 mins. See if you can work a pile of dirt with it to see how it pulls under a load. Go threw each gear after it is hot makeing sure all work. Check that the trans works the PTO.

If all this checks out and you can get him to throw in that scraper box with the deal you have done well at $4300

I notice this tractor has a Select-O-Speed transmission. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it can be a real money pit if it's not been properly maintained. Pay special attention to the transmission operation and be prepared to walk away if it acts strange or balky in any gear.

I have an 841 with a Wagner loader. They are great macines for lightish loader work (e.g., mine will handle loads in the bucket up to about 1000 lbs) One issue is breaking the front axle support, but once it breaks it can be welded and beefed up.

That machine ....

Loader looks abit heavy - be careful not to over do it.

Bucket looks made from an oil tank, not necessarily a bad thing but may have digging limits,

Tilt cylinders looked like they are leaking a fair bit.

Can't tell if it is power steering - almost essential for a loader

Does it have a sherman combo trasmission (two to three speed ranges depending on the particular add on tranny)

Looks like a fairly recent resto - refurbishment, if it is running well, shifts as it is supposed to, no bad oil leaks AND

the scrapper box / scarifier come with it, I think $4300 is a fair to good price depending on the market in your area.
