Have tried 2 one wire alternators on my 1954 NAA and both crank out 18+ volts. Battery will boil, any thoughts.

You alt. should put out more than 12 volts untill your battery is at a full charge. let it run and when your battery is charged it should read about 12.6 volts. New batteries come about 60%-70% charged I have used several one wire and have no trouble. Thay are great for tractors with mags now extra switches just a orignal kill button.

Sounds like they are bad.. or are not really fully 1 wire jobs.. but 3 wire jobs that happen to self excite.. and have no reference for V at the # 2 pin..

Yep you have found another reason the 1 wires don't work as well as the 3 wire set up does. If I where you I would go with the 3 wire type and be done with it. On all the 3 wire set ups I have done I have never had any problems

I agree with old. The 3 wire is the way to go.

What are the other 2 wires on a 3 wire set-up? I assume that this would use the original voltage regulator as opposed to a self regulated delco alternator?

The delco 10SI alternator has a built in regulator. From the little plug it has 2 wires one goes to the battery stud on the alternatro the other goes to the switched side of the ignition switch so thats why its called a 3 wire. From the battery stud you run a wire to the battery or other such place so you end up with a total of 3 wires

Thanks. So if I understand it correctly, when it is running, there is 12 volt power to all 3 wires? I believe I have one of these and it doesn't seem to be working at all and I wanted to be sure I am wiring it correctly.
Thanks for the help!

Brian, the plug on the back of the Delco alternator is labeled #1 & #2. #2 is hooked to the large Bat terminal. #1 is hooked either to a diode, or charge indicator lamp(200ma@12V--#1815 lamp)..HTH
