My father in law has a 641 ford and wants to get a tiller for it. He found a 5 footer and a 6 footer for $400. I was telling him my 8n will not pull a tiller because of ground speed and he was not aware of that. Does his 641 have a low enough ground speed to pull a 5 ft tiller properly? Any info is appreciated.

I guess I'm at a loss here, I have a 860 w/industrial 172, I've been pulling a 60inch Howard tiller for over 7 years now, haven't had any problem as of yet!! I don't think the 641 has enough power to run either the 60inch (5ft)or the 72Inch (6ft).Especially since the 641 does not have a live PTO.

I was told the early 4 cyl diesel 4000 were pretty near a 871. Anyway, with the SOS I work a 5' tiller in sandy soil just fine. This just kinda verifies what has already been said. bjr

Well put it this way. We have an 841 and we tried a tiller once. We found out it didn't work well because it went to fast. We have a combo sherman in it and if we put it in double low it worked better but then we didn't have enough PTO speed to work the tiller well so NO your 641 will not work well with a tiller because it to goes to fast like the 8N does. Now if it was a 651 or 661 they work a lot better but have been told they still are just a little fast

If those tillers are functional he better buy both of them. At the auctions (Central Texas) I've been to over the past couple of years a functioning 5' or 6' 3PH tiller brings at least $800.

I doubt it.
As Soundguy mentions you could find a Ford with a Select O Speed. But you won't find a manual tranny Ford that will handle a rear tiller untill you get into the 3 cylinder models which were introduced in 1965.
The 3 cyl Fords came with an optional 8 sp. tranny (4x2) and do have a slow enough ground speed to till with.
The (3 cyl) Thousand Series are the finest tractors Ford ever built and if you can get past the color change you will never long for a red belly again.

A 641 is gonna be like a NAA.. realitivly close or same ground speed in that 4 spd gearbox.. though the 134ci engine is beefier thant he 119ci engine. If it was to work.. it would be the smaller tiller. I think a *5* or *6* would be better.. or the -ahem- SOS *71 or *81 models..
