How hard a job is it to change the outer seals on the rear axle of a Ford 3600? I have the brake drums off and see one of them is starting to leak. Does the whole axle have to come apart or just the end? I don't have a service manual so if someone could email me the pages, I would sure appreiciate it. Thanks.

Bob,
It should be a pretty straightforward job.
Loosen the 9? bolts that go around the hub and pull the axle out. Your seal should be easy to get at then. Make sure you put all the shims back in as they are what space the axle into the differential properly. Be glad you have a 3600 and not a 3000.
The 3000 requires a couple special tools like a socket and a gear puller about 30" long.

Not sure why the 3600 wouldn't require the same tools or substitutes for them. The 3000/3600 axle assemblies are the same assuming both have difflock. It's just as easy and a whole lot quicker to remove the nut and torch the bearing out as to screw around with even the OEM special puller. BTDT.

RickB,
Ford changed things in the rear axle between the 3000 and 3600.
I'm on the spot now since I don't own a manual for the 3600. But a year ago I was messing around putting a 3600 rear onto a 3000 and realized then that the 3600 would be much easier to replace that seal in.

Check the online parts breakdown. If you can find a 3000 less difflock, they use a shrink collar bearing retainer like a 801 or similar. A 3000 or 3600 with difflock uses a threaded axle shaft and nut to retain the bearing. Either style will require a torch or puller to remove the bearing. Certainly not a significant difference in tool requirements or effort.

Mine has the large nuts at the end of the axles. The axles came out just fine but since I don't have a torch or lage enough sockets, I think I will let a mechanic deal with the bearings and seals and then I will put the rest back together. Thanks for the help.
