I keep burning up the front mount coil on my 9N. I am not sure what is causing it. Ive put a new battery in the tractor with the belief a bad battery was the cause but still continue to fry coils. Once started the tractor runs like a champ. Would appreciate any input.

Ok. Finally got off my lazy duff went to look at resistor. Found it was broken in only 2 places. Again thanks so much.

6 volt or 12 volt. If 6 volts some one probably removed or took out of the circuit the resister that is mounted behind the dash. If 12 volts then you probably don't have the correct ballast resister in the system

Sorry I didnt think to mention that info until after I posted. It is a 6 volt system. 6 volt battery and coil. Although am wondering if I should convert it to 12 volts.

Sounds like some one at some point in time did away with the resister that it has to have. That resister is mounted on the back side of the dash. If you look down inside in the same area as you do to gas it up you should see it if its there. With out it you will in fact burn out the coils since even the 6 volt coil is made to work on 3 volts give or take a volt of 2.

By the way that resister isn't just a run of the mill type of resister. When you first turn on the key it acts almost like a piece of wire and as it gets warm the thing gets hot and the resistance goes up slowly till it reaches the point that it does what it should do. I have seen a good number of them that have been removed or wired around because they have burned out and if that has been done it does cause the problem you have

Only to check. Is the resistor near the fuel tank and battery or will I be able to get to it from the side. From the side I can see the back side of the key with the terminals.

Best way I can think of to tell you where it is, is this. Stand up on the floor boards if you have them and then look down and back towards the rear of the tractor with the lid up. It will be right on the back side of the dash area and to the left of the steering column or at least thats where I have always seen them.

Thank you for your rapid response. I will locate and if it is connected, remove and replace. I bet that has to be cheaper than spending $90 - 120 for coils.

If you have an O'reillys auto part store in your area buy a coil from them, they have a life time warentty on them so replaceing them is easy and cheap
