Fit of the reproduction manifold 800, 900 etc???

Ok, I purchased one of the reproduction manifolds for my gas 55 960 (172cu in). I installed it and discovered that the carb mounting flange is a lot bigger than the carb flange, though the bolt pattern is the same. The flange hole is also bigger than the carb flange hole. I also noticed that the carb now sits higher than with the old manifold - like almost an inch! Now the breather tube will not meet up with the carb. Has anyone else experienced this? Should there be a spacer between the carb and manifold flange? Should the hole be tapered to make a smoother transition between the holes? Surely this can"t be just me?

I did have the breather tube all the way up to the tube for the air cleaner. I also loosened the bolts for the original air cleaner so that it was pushed up as far as possible. It is bolted to a new batter tray, but the mounting locations are at the same height as original. I"ll snap a picture on the weekend and post it up here so everyone can see the Height difference I"m talking about. When I purchased the manifold (on ebay) the ad listed it for an 800, 900 etc but said nothing about the flange being larger or this height difference. I wish they would have given more info. My old manifold was junk anyway- baked out, it was brittle and cracked in many places and continued to crack in new places as time went on.

You know mine might not be at the orginal height either. I managed to get the air cleaner tube on but my choke rod doesn't seem to fit right. I have had this thing torn down since August rebuilding it and don't quit remember how the choke rod fit before I know now it hit the throttle plate. I will have to take a measurement to see the difference.

Hi Brad; Yeah, I noticed the same thing. It effected the choke rod as well. Had to make some minor adjustments to get it to work smoothly.

I installed one of the manifolds not long ago. I did notice that the flange is larger, as said it's universal. Now on the carb height, I really didn't measure but mine lines up with a little work and tugging but it was like that before. Pull your oil bath loose put the tube on then bolt it back up. Also make sure you have the breather tube from the oil bath to the carb pushed up to the oil bath all the way, that might be contributing to your problem.

Brad:

Ford changed to a larger carb on the 172 CI equipped tractors when the xx1 series came out.

All replacement manifolds are "universal fit" such that either the small or large carb will bolt on. Yes, it's a compromise.

By the way the exhaust is also larger on the later 172s and the replacement manifolds will accept either size exhaust elbow, both of which are readily available.

I cannot speak to the vertical positioning of the carburetor.
