I got a 4100 Ford with power steering. Fluid got low and I filled the pump. Fluid leaks from under the steering wheel. What's broke. Leak is bad.

I took the control valve to the Ford/New Holland dealer, and they reassembled the control valve for me. They also sold me a repair manual which showed the correct assembly instructions.

After reinstalling everything, my power steering is not working. Consultation with the dealership told me that I might have the nut above the bearings too tight, keeping the control valve from working.

The manual says to "remove all play, and then back the nut off 1/6 turn before setting the nut with a punch in the Locator hole." How much tension should the bearings above the control valve have?

I loosened the nut and did my best to lightly remove all up and down play on the steering shaft, and then back the nut off 1/6 of a turn. It still didn't work for me.

I have been experimenting with different tension on the bearings (and control valve) for a couple of days, but have not found the combination which makes everything work properly.

All help would be gratefully appreciated.
Email help would also be welcome.

Looking at your posted parts diagram, I would like to ask a question:
Is there a resource that would tell me the exact number of parts and their correct placement in the "Hydraulic Valve Assembly" on the 1975 3400 that I am repairing? The Hydraulic Valve assembly is the part of the steering column where the power steering lines attach.

The New Holland web site parts look-up shows a parts diagram similar to the diagram you have posted above, and lists the part number for the Hydraulic valve assembly as "C5NN3A730B". However, the diagram doesn't show the exact placement of each piston, plunger, ball, and spring.

Would the $150 Ford service/shop manual show what I need? (The small service manual at Tractor Supply, etc, doesnt' have this info, only a caution about how they must be installed.)

Is there anyone here on the forum who might have a scan that shows the information that I need?

Thanks in advance!

Jr, look over to the left under Galleries and parts and pieces. I uploaded a break down but can't seem to get the image on here. You must remove the strg wheel, all sheet metal from around the tank and the upper part of the strg column. Be sure to clean any rust from the shaft before assemble.
