My 3pt just quit - need help to diagnose

I have an 850 (1955, I believe). It has the early type hydraulic pump (square). Last spring, I used it with a Howard Rotovator that must weigh close to 1000 lbs, and the hitch picked it up without complaint. Then, last summer, I took the tractor out of service for repainting and a new wiring harness. It is now ready to go back to work, except that the 3pt is now dead as a stone. Can the system fail when/because it is not in use? Is there a way for me to check for a valve that is stuck open or closed, so the lift cylinder is not seeing any pressure? I have a round pump and manifold in stock for a planned rehab of another tractor, so I could swap the square pump out if I had to as part of the diagnosis, but I would like to keep the 850 original. What's my first move?

I'm with Glen.. I'd prime the pump.

Compressed air with a blower noczzle can be applied to the dipstick hole while you are truning the engine over.. or it is running, and with the lift handle in the up position..

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the compressed air technique, and let you know how it works.

Just a guess, but could the pump have lost its prime while sitting?
