I have '62 4000D 4 cyl. SOS and I've probably got 1/4" to 3/8" end play on the PTO output shaft. Is this normal or should I be concerned? bjr

The Pto shaft on the mower needs a good greasing where the two halvs slide to geather, they will lock up under load and break pto housing on tractor where snap ring holds pto & brg in place.

I'm not fam with the sos models or any differences thay have in the PTO area.. but generally.. a pto shaft with end play has a bad bearing or retainer ring.

Find an exploded parts diagram in your manual and look at the pto section.

I have a 1971 4000 SU and have the same issue. I replaced the seal last summer and while mowing yesterday noticed the PTO shaft has slid aft and the new seal is leaking. Apparently the mechanism that keeps the shaft from moving has failed and possibly the bearing also needs to be replaced. If someone is knowledgeable I also would appreciate some advice.
