My 1952 8N only ran when the choke was full out. Now it doesn't want to run at all. These problems showed up after the tractor had been sitting all winter. The year before it ran fine. Any helpful ideas would be appreciated. This tractor was purchased brand new by father and has much sentimental value to my son and me.

Well lets start from the top of things to check. #1 make sure you have a good brite blue spark. 50% of running problems is loose of spark or weak spark, a simple tune up may fix your problem. Ya I know you say chokeing it helps but if you have weak spark haveing a richer mix of fuel going in will make it run with weak spark because more gas will bur easier. Then if you have good spark check all 3 filters in the fuel system. Also pull the drain plug from the bottom of the carb and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas there for at least 5 minutes. Catch that gas as it drain and make sure its not full of rust etc. Post back if you need more info

Thanks for the tips. I changed points & condensor still no spark, then I changed the switch. Guess what, she popped right off. But then she ran for 30 seconds and killed. I checked the fuel line and it was only dripping by the carb. So I pulled the sediment bulb assembly and drained the gas out, next I blew out the assembly with a compressor and the screens. The bottom one was bad so I scraped it off with a knife and blew it out again. Now I"m off to buy fresh gas and try it again. Could you tell me what is the recommended adjustment for the needle valves on the carb. Thanks again.

Well the top one close to the manifold is set at around 3/4 turn out from bottom to start with and the main jet the one that sits at a 45 degree angle about 1-1/2 turn out from bottom. Those are just starting points from there you adjust the main jet to get the most power with out haveing black smoke out the exhaust.

The choke full out to make it run can also indicate a cracked manifold or bad intake manifold gasket. I would never get rid of my Dad's tractor if I had it, keep it running and pass it down, it will run forever with good maintenance, and it is easy to work on. You will find many experts on this tractor over in the 9N, 2N, 8N forum.

Bob: I'm going to assume you stored it with gas in the carb....so it's time to take the carb off and clean all the "varnish" from old fuel out of it. Good luck, and really, the Ford carb is fairly straight-forward so it's not a big job. Jim B.
