I need help, so once again I come here to you knowledgable folks.

I'm trying to find an exploded view or diagram or something of the power steering cylinder on our tractor. I'm not entirely sure which model it is, I think its about a 1970 4000 series though. It's possible it might be a 1975 4600. I've included a picture of the cylinder itself.

third party image

Picture is taken from the "drivers" side of the engine bay, looking down with the engine on the right, and the hydraulic pump on the left. You can see the cylinder I'm having problems with at the top.

I'm also looking to find out where I can get a replacement cylinder. I've been searching the site, found out a guy named Pernell might be able to sell me one? but can't find his phone number.

Thanks for the help. I hope its allowed to link images like this. If its a problem I'll take it down.

Same as in my 71 4500. I agree with JF in CT about the possibility of a frozen pin. My steering was not working and that is what it turned out to be. It took a long time and lots of heat and penetrant etc. as I was doing it from outside without taking anything apart. Not much room to work. Looks like yours will be more accessible.
It has been some time, and the machine is in another town so I can't go check, but I think it was the pin with the cotter in it you see about half of near the bottom of the picture. It will only rotate about 1/16 of an inch, hardly noticeable, but if it can't turn that little bit it won't move the actuator rod on top of the cylinder.
I had blocked up the front of the machine, disconnected the actuator rod and worked it by hand to determine that the cylinder was working fine. Try that if you haven't already.

OK, so I'm a little slow on the uptake, and did not see that you found out what your problem was. Ever since I did my steering fix though I have been waiting for a chance to post my experience so hopefully someone will see it and benefit from the easy, cheap fix. Good luck finding a used part. Thanks again for the info.

I had actually started to remove the cylinder there yeah, so I'm the one that took the pin out of the actuator rod. Took it down and had the hydraulics guys tear into it, came back with "too corroded to even rebuild" So now I'm in need of a new one. I tried Pernell (thanks for that number) but he could only get me a new one, and I'm afraid I can't afford to spend that much.

Does anyone have/know of a decent used cylinder that won't break the bank? I'm hoping for something in the $300-$400 range if possible. I'm in the process of calling all the salvage yards at the moment.

I sure have a hard time with this message board. I'm used to VPBulletin and IPB boards, not sure why all my replies are at the top of the page rather than the bottom. Sorry bout that.

Thanks for all the info.

I think I finally found at least a parts page from a dealer, so that should be enough to get the hydraulics guy to work on it.

It's just flat out not working at all. Steering is so hard it's the same with the motor on or off, and with the wheels up in the air. The P.S. Pump itself is putting out about 1400 lbs though, so its not that. I dont know if its in the actuator or the cylinder itself, which is why I'm having it rebuilt.

Heh. Odd though... its the one cylinder on the whole machine thats never leaked.

Unless you started taking it out, judging by the picture, the fact that the actuator rod pin is missing will definately cause that. Also, the leaver that the rod is mounted to must move a little. If it is rusted frozen in place then the valve actuator rod won't move to operate the valve. Point is; your problem may be mechanical, not hydraulic.

Exactly like the PS in my '69 4500 ind TLB. Not too complicated. Most of the seals are standard 'O' rings. Stopped the leak in mine with 'O' rings from the local hardware store. Is it leaking or just won't work? Mine used to quit when the pump inlet screen (inside the main hydraulic tank) got clogged.

I have this setup on my tractor also, last time i looked at parts it appeared the 5000 series uses this setup also. Might find parts or a kit that would work on 4-5000"s. I just can"t wait to get into my dripping seals, not too bad yet, but it"s coming.
