I have a 1956 Ford 600 and just had a chance to buy a 52" cut John Deere tiller for the PTO. I passed on it because i wasn't sure my tractor was powerful enough to handle it. What do you guys think?

I sure would like that tiller for putting in food plots and a big garden.

Do you have a 640 (4-speed) or 650 or 660 (5-speed)? The 640 can't go slow enough for running a tiller. The 650 and 660 can go slower, but still not really slow enough. If the ground had been worked some beforehand, and you have a 5-speed, you may be able to get by with it. Power wise, it should be OK.

Yep, a tiller is when a dual range tranny really comes into its own. Low gear on a 4-spd box is still just a little fast for a tiller especially - as was pointed out - if the ground is a little hard.

Just as a side note, I used the tiller off my father in law's Kubota on my 8N years ago. Worked ok (not great) but the soil was *very* sandy so it wasn't working too hard to till it. Not a setup I'd recommend though.

Hope this helps.

I think you just answered my question. It's a 4 speed. Guess I'll just stick with my plow & disc.
Thanks

Years ago my dad tried a tiller behind our 841 and found it didn't work well because it was to fast in 1st. He said tillers where a joke and said he would never think about one again but what he didn't know it had to do with speed not the tiller.
