Ford 1600/Tie Rod End

I recently bought a Ford 1600 for the little lady. While we were tilling a spot for a flower garden, the drag link fell off from the right steering arm. I am not sure how this happened, the threads look fine on the tie rod end. My question is this..... what is the best (easiest) way to get the ball joint out of the steering arm?

Bama,

Glen is right by saying to use the "pickle fork" or splitter. I had a tie rod that worked its way loose from all the movement, just about fell out.

You could try a nice tap from a hammmer, just make sure to back the nut off so you hit the nut and don't knurl the threads on the tie rod. If its loose it will go, if not you need a splitter.

The easiest way is to buy a ball joint and tie rod separator. HF has them for $10.00. It's a two pronged fork shaped in a wedge with a handle that you drive between the drag link and steering arm. One or two good pops and they generally break free. Sometimes you can use a regular puller applying pressure to the end of the threaded portion of the drag link. A good pop on the end of the puller will pop it loose. Thats if you have enough room for the puller. I'd spend the 10 bucks. Hope this helps.

The ball joint stud is tapered, and the steering arm eye is smooth..... right?

Yes, to both. No threads in the eye, or the majority of the stud. Enough threads on the stud for the retaining nut.

Did you get it apart yet? If not, and if I understand that you are wanting to get the tapered stud out of the steering arm, here's the old tried and true method. Hold a heavy hammer or dolly tight against the side of the steering arm next to (perpendicular to) the stud. Rap the opposite side of the arm with another big hammer. The blow will upset the taper momentarily, and the stud will pop loose. It may take two or more attempts to git er done, but usually works for me on the the first go.
