Well I pulled the plugs and distributor, cleaned everything, checked the spark plug gap, confirmed TDC. Tractor started and was running pretty smoothly, no backfiring at all. Then the new problem came up. The number 2 spark plug wire started popping off. I repeatedly pushed it in, and then when I gave it some gas #1 and #2 wires would pop off at the same time. Any ideas why the wires would pop off, do I need new wires? Any advice would as usual be appreciated. Thanks.

Brian

Thanks for the comments. I'll back them out and make sure they are threaded correctly and retighten. I'm wondering if this was the cause fo the original backfiring. Thanks again.

I'm with murn.. either plugs are a tad loose.. or bad.. and compression is getting by / thru them.

Is the top of your spark plugs threaded? If so get the (nuts)and screw them on.Then the terminals will stay on.I hope I have guessed right. CENTAUR

I have the nuts screwed onto the tops of the spark plugs already, and the wires still pop off.

I feel like you have a bit of compression escaping the plugs. I do not know the torque for the plugs, but i would tighten another 1/4 round and try it.
