Bought a Ford 801 4 cyl; already converted to 12 Volts, negative ground. Used to start fine, sometimes had to use screw driver at the junction of the push-to-start button and the wire to get a crank. I lost the key to the ignition and pulled it out and replaced it with a push-pull switch; the tractor started good for a day or so, then I started getting rapid clicking with no starter cranking; then it went dead. I changed all the electrical items (Starter, Solenoid, ignition switch, push to start switch, resistor, ammeter, new battery, and fuze), I still get nothing. The coltage meter shows current across all switches, but I am not sure I am checking them correctly... Anyone has any idea what else to check or what to do, please? This is supposed to be my new-farm tractor.

Re: No click -t urned on. in reply to BFV-MG, 05-25-2007 22:07:23
Folks, especially John in La, thanks for the help. The tractor is running.
I tried to crank the starter while it was in the whole hooking it up straight to the battery, but couldn't get it to turn, although it clicked. I decided to take it out of the hole and hook it up outside; it worked. Then I Cleaned all coonection and put the wires back together the way John sent me the Diagram, and she turned right up. I had to make two modifications to John's diagram:
1. My Coil had an outside resistor, I hooked it up in line. 2. My Alternator has only one wire coming out of the BAT; I hooked that wire to my Ammeter (which still works), and the other post of the Ammeter to the top post of the Solenoid. Sweet sound; Thanks a bunch again for all your help. Now I have spare parts plenty :)
Tony

I agree with the others.. shotgun parts replacement only serves to hamper diagnostics.

Charge the battery, and then go 1 system at a time.. get starter spinning.. then move to ignition.. etc..

It is real tough to help when you have went in and starting replacing parts.

To find a starting problem we will only work with the red wires. The other wires have nothing to do with starting.

Start by checking wire connections.

John, thanks a bunch for the wiring diagram; real help. I will check all the red wires. I also appreciate your comment about changing all the parts; I really got over board there - just out of frustration.

Let me start by saying I am not trying to suggest you did wrong by changing parts but some do go over board and change parts that in no way affect the problem they have.

I am the kind of guy that bypass parts to check when I can and some may not agree with my tactics but they work for me.

Whit that said I would put tractor in neutral making sure it is really in neutral. Then I would hook the + battery cable direct to the starter and see if it cranks. If it does we now can eliminate the starter and battery. If it will NOT crank we now know the problem is the battery; starter; or battery cable.

If it did crank with this test I would hook everything back up right and check for power at the small wire from the terminal block/key switch at the starter relay with the key on.

If that has power I would ground the other small post on the relay and see if it cranks.

By taking these steps I can narrow down where the problem is and concentrate on that small area.

Thanks John; what you say makes perfect sense and I will try it (again) when the rain lets up a little, hopefully by tomorrow. The first time I tried to jump the starter straight from the battery couple of weeks ago, it did not work - on both the old and new starter; but now I have a new battery, and hopefully it will work... Will definitely let you know.

check your cable connections. Use a brush or file to clean the connectors and the studs they attach to. Especially the ground cable. Check continuity between the ground stud on the starter and the starter case. I had one where the stud wasn't making good contact with the starter case. Same symptoms.

Thanks jml755; I will make sure all connections are clean and WILL pay particular attention to the ground wire; although I am not sure how to check continuity between the ground stud on the starter and the starter case... I will look at it more closely. Didn"t think about this one.

no click: will that wiring work on my 1841? in reply to BFV-MG, 05-26-2007 21:01:08
Will your wiring diagram work for my 1958 model 1841 Industrial? Previous owner began conversion then stopped.

YES

If you need some help start a new thread so we can all see it. This thread is getting kind of far down the list.

That's good news. It will be several days before I can get to my Ford. Will post anew when I get rolling...if I need more info.

Thanks again,
Dennis
