I'm looking at buying a 1970 ford 4500 backhoe diesel. The injector pump keeps losing it prime and the owner says once its primed its good for a couple of days. He said once its running it works great, but he did notice the pump leaks fuel from the back of the pump (closest to the motor) while it's running. What might be some causes- solutions. What might it cost to rebuild the pump. What other things should I watch out for on this unit. Does it have a good reliable history as a backhoe? Any strong or weak points on the unit?

Thanks you very much for the advice!

Dan

Loss of prime indicates a leak in the system, likely on the fuel pump side of things. If your fuel pump is part of the injector pump, then you should have it rebuilt. If you can removed the fuel pump separately you can fix the problem that way. Cost will depend on what your shop charges for its hourly rate, and the cost of supplies, but you are probabaly gonna pay around 200 bucks.

Dan,
I have a 4500 that had a backhoe and FEL at one time, but those were removed before I bought the tractor. I think I may have experienced the loss of prime on the fuel pump a few days ago. I hope somebody has helpful input on that problem. I've had my tractor two years, and it seems like a reliable, economical tractor. Mine has steering problems, and it's slow on the road because it's geared so low.
