My 4 cylinder gas 4 speed has too fast a ground speed for almost everything I use it for.1st and 2nd gears get a lot of use,3rd some,and 4th none.Reverse is even too fast for what I do.It has 11.2X28s on it now and could use new tires,Firestone offers 12.4X28 for replacements that would make things worse.What do you guys suggest?Thanks

Boley:

Like Jim says, the rather rare LCG models had 24" rims with dual 8.4x24 tires with a higher ratio ring and pinion. I have a good friend with one of these. The problem with this set up is width. My friend's tractor is too wide with the duals to do the things that I need to do. Without the duals it will not pull the hat off of your head.

Also, like Larry said, it sounds like you need a Select-O-Speed. These much disparaged transmissions have several very low gears that are great for roto-tilling or hay baling.

My friend's 1963 2000 LCG is a S-O-S. It is absolutely great for mowing grass on steep ground but the ground clearance is insufficient for things that it was not designed to do such as raking hay.

I have a '63 2000 LCG that came stock with 24" rears. Put those on but don't use the wider sizes. The narrower ones aren't near as tall.

Trade it for a good Select-O-Speed. :-). Even a five speed would have the slow ratios you want. Short of doing one of these or adding a Sherman auziliary (and that doesn't help if you're doing PTO work) there's little if anythig you can do to get the gearing you want.

Look for a Sherman Underdrive unit to add to your transmission.

You won't notice an appreciable speed change.

My 8n has 11.2-28.. my NAA has 16.9-24 .. bigger stance.. both are just as unuseable in reverse and 4th gear.

Don't feel bad.. on the 5 speeds.. I got 2 of em'.. I've nver used 4th or 5th.. couldn't even tell ya if they work on my 660 / 850.. and I only use reverse at dead idle..

Boley;

What are you doing that 1 or 2 is too fast. 4th is road gear. To use traveling on a road. We had a 641 which is an earlier model. Had the 4spd. tranny. I did not think any of our tractors had too fast of a reverse.Except an 8N I had for awhile.

We had a 3 cyl. Ford 2000 (30hp)with the 4x2 tranny. That would give you some slow speeds.
Or possibly,you need a bigger tractor.
