Can anyone tell me the year of this engine? 172 cubic inch gas model with serial #310609. It has steel sleves with standard pistons. The carb is a Marvel shebler TSX-662

The engine is upstate NY and I am here on Long Island. I will take another look at it when I return up there in 2 weeks. My service book says the latest model 172 had steel sleves. The serial #stamped on the transmission is 41205. #4 is 172 gas or diesel, #1 is agricul or industrial produced 1963 or later, #2 does not match what I have . This is a heavy duty industrial 1801. Non adjustable axle but not an orchard machine as the book says. This machine is full of mysteries. Could the factory have made an ID mistake? Thanks for all the help guys.

I also feel you have a late 50's 172" block from your casting # of 310609.

Now lets see if the date code is still on it. On the other side of the engine (left side) at the bottom of the block near the front is a date code. 2 #'s a screw that holds the plate on and a letter.

My date code: 8A+ D in reply to john in la, 06-02-2007 07:56:49
Any idea what this translates to? I guess 8 is for 1958 and A is for January. "+" is the screw or rivet head but what is the D? Shouldn't that be a number for the day of the month?

Look real close. It most likely say 84*D. 1958 4th April.

The # on my 1959 861D tractor is 84*G. 1958 4th July.

Attn: john in la- It's definitely an A - 8A* in reply to john in la, 06-02-2007 08:53:20
The entire line of text in the casting consists of:
A capital "F" inside of a capital "C" (Cleveland Foundry????); "8A* D": then a gap of about 1.5" and a "2".
Did the person preparing the mold assemble the casting date plate one character at a time? If so then maybe he/she picked up an A by mistake instead of a 4.
E-mail is open.

I think that is a casting number, not a serial number. The SN is only on the transmission and is hand stamped.

The 172" Diesel in my 1958 861D has 310609 cast into it's right side. If I'm not horribly mistaken the early 172's (introduced in 1955) had the "EAF" casting number, the middle 172's had the "310609" casting number and the late 172's had the "C0NN-6015-?" casting number. C0 (that's a numeral 0, not a letter O) indicates 1960 in Ford terminology. I don't know when they switched from EAF to 310609 but I feel safe to say you have a late 50's 172" block.
