I'm stumped. Had the starter checked, its good. Put battery charger on and says battery is charged. Tested the start button, ok too. Tested the key switch, its ok. Have cleaned the ground cable conection and put on new cable, have tested for good ground to starter and is good. When I engage the start button with the charger on the battery the charger shows a draw. Seems like still a bad ground? used jumper cable from battery to the starter no change? Could the key switch be grounding internaly? its about the only thing I have not replaced, but tests ok. Maybe a broken wire someplace, but all the wires were replaced year ago. ???

Finally figured it out! Took battery to have load test and no good at load. Put a new 6 volt in her and she fired right up. Happy days. Should have figured it out sooner, oh well.

I had a similar encounter with my TO 30. I partially disassembled it to paint. I was careful to mask off the starter/tractor mating surfaces to ensure good grounding. When I put it all back together, wouldn't turn over. Tried to jump it with my truck , but it just started arcing the starter post. I could tell that the truck engine drawed down, but the tractor wouldn't turn over (yes, I hooked the cables up properly and NOT to the 6V battery). Then I did the following:

1. Ran another battery ground cable to cast instead of the instrument panel.

2. Replaced key switch and cleaned up the wire connections (BTW, original key WILL fit in aftermarket switch).

3. Replaced the battery (even though it fine when I removed it 6 weeks earlier to paint) with one from another tractor.

4. Turned the engine over a couple times by hand. I don't have a hand crank, so I used a screwdriver that fit sideways onto the end of the crank where the hand crank would go.

Don't remember what order I did these in, but one or more of these fixed the problem and it starts right up now.

Good luck!

Pull the key switch out of circuit and use jumper wires to test that theory.
