Hi,
I just got a 4140 HD industrial with a bad SOS, complete with 712 loader and 723 14' hoe. There are some parts missing and some buggering up of other things, but overall it's a good machine. It will probably become a source of parts for me as the diesel engine is supposed to have 50 psi of oil pressure and the proofmeter only shows 1489 hours. Many of the structural parts are in excellent shape. I was surprised to see that it had a 3pt lift cover on it and PTO. They normally don't. No 3pt arms, but still it was a bonus.

The bugs were starting to bug me, and I didn't get an overall shot, but here's one of the tractor and loader.

While inspecting it, I came across an odd tag on the loader above the loaders SN tag. Hard to read, but it says, "Visual Aids"

Then under the steering column sheetmetal there was a brass tag.

Anybody know what these tags are trying to tell me?

Thanks!
jb

Howdy Larry!

Thanks for the info. I talked to Tony Jacobes awhile today. (That's a dangerous thing by the way. For some reason we always seem to talk about all kinds of interesting stuff - some even tractor related!)

Say, the SOS casting date appears to be early.

But the SN does not appear to be a re-stamp.

Any thoughts?

Also, Tony thought that if this was a photo tractor, then there may be some pictures of the "Visual Aids" tag above the loader data plate or of the engineering tag under the steering column sheet metal. You ever notice anything like that in your literature?

Kind a of unique one there, wish I could help with those tags, to be honest, we never had one of those come in to the shop when we had a ford dealership, at least as I remember, those 4100's must not have had high production numbers, I recall the 4500, 5500, and others, which we sold new, would have loved to pick the brains of the 4 brothers that worked for us there, they spent a career on Ford's, excellent mechanics and sure did not mind my presence as a kid around the shop, was a lot of fun in those days.

I know the deal with S-O-S's, kind of intimidating , seems strange that they put those in these tractors, same as the others correct 10 forward 2 reverse ? We had a 64 4000 which I spent a lot of hours on as a kid, maybe you can diagnose it before you decide to part it out, that could possibly have some collector value, those features you mentioned and the condition of things, hours are tough to confirm, and of course that S-O-S could be a money pit to fix, but you never know, possibly get a parts S-O-S trans somewhere. Interesting shots of that one, never really saw one of these up close, just miscellaneous photos here.

That one was a special rig for Ford company. The I & T stands for Instruction and Training and may have been used in the photog work for Adverts, promo movies and brochures.

Really? You mean it was a "movie star"?

Cool.

Here's some more pictures, including some date codes. Anyone able to decode them for me?
