How reliable is the steering on the 1700 series fords? I'm looking at one that's got some leaks. Do they hold up well. this is a 4 wheel drive tractor. How about the rect of the tractor?

I haven't heard of particular steering problems. I assume it's similar to my 1710, which is powered by a priority valve from the single pump. The hydraulic power is developed in the steering sector itself, rather than an external cylinder. There are seals in the sector that can leak. Repair requires removing the sector, which is a bit involved.

The steering had a lot of play when I first got my 1710. I cured the main problem when I figured out that the engine has to running to adjust the steering play--the owner's manual doesn't say that but the repair manual does. In addition to the poor adjustment, the column was loose. The previous owner probably used the wheel to climb on and off). Tightening the column required a bit a work, but now the steering is fine. Mine is a later 1710 that has a steering damper to improve stability at higher speeds. I don't imagine a 1700 is fitted with a damper.

About the only reliability problems I've heard are one opinion that the design of the front drive shaft to differential coupler may be a bit light. However, I haven't heard of many failures. My 1710 4wd linkage did fail at the differential. Again, the failure can be attributed to previous owner abuse. The 4wd-engagement lever had been broken off at its collar and welded back on.

This is a 1710 series. There is a little fluid leaking. I think the previous owner abused it like you said. Actually it looks like this part was replaced. Are there manuals for the repair of the steering head? I've heard that this was power assisted not power steering. I went to the tractor salvage yard yesterday and was rather alarmed to see a pile of the 1700 series and 1710 series. It appeared that most had their trannies removed. At least I've got spare parts for a price.
Thanks for your help here.
