Am converting my 2000 from 6v to 12v. The altenator with the "Sparex" kit has a note printed on outside of box "Replace with pulley provided". There is a heavier spare pulley provided. My question is: Does anyone know the secret to removing the pulley that comes on the alternator? The shaft has a hex slot in the end and the pulley is held on by a 7/8 nut. I have applied all the pressure I can muster but it does not budge.

My GOD, you guys make things sound TOUGH!

A 3/8" impact wrench will spin that nut off in a split second. (A 1/2" unit is OVERKILL.) Hold the pulley/fan with a leather glove.

If you don't have an impact wrench, tote the alternator to a shop that DOES.

Just BE CAREFUL when "buzzing" it tight, so as not to strip the nut.

Even one of those cheap 12v lugnut guns will work...

I used to have an old 12v impact gun.. it was kinda weak.. I called it 'lilly' It would take forever to hammer a lugnut off.. but it was great for alternators... I don't think it was strong enough to strip them even... had that thing for a long time.. gave it to a friend after I picked up a 3/8 and 1/2 air gun and compressor a few years ago..

I allways just put a socket over the nut and clamped a visegrip on the socket then you can put an allen wrench down through the socket to hold it while you turn
