801 diesel or whatever its number is. Ran yesterday with bush hog with no problems. Parked last night with no problems. This morning will not move in any gear except 9 and 10. No reverse either. Acts like it trys a bit in some gears. 9 and 10 will all most spin the wheels, full power. Checked fluid of course. What could happen over night? I have a supplement for 2000/4000 SOS, so have pictures. Any opinions appreciated.

C,

It sounds like you have an 871-D or an 881-D depending on whether you have the 540 PTO only (871) or the two speed PTO (881). I am a rookie and just learning with my 971. Do your supplements provide the trouble shooting table for the SOS? This table indicates which bands and/or clutches are applied for each gear setting.

First, confirm that your PTO control is fully disengaged.

Second, what year is the tractor? The SOS transmissions changed some through the years and the year of the tractor may help others.

Third, when you check transmission operation, the engine should be running well and at idle. Then select the desired gear and slowly release the inching pedal. Record your observations.

Guages will allow you to check pressure at the servos. Mr. Carl Davis (one of the original SOS gurus with Ford) indicated he hadn't used guages in 25 years, but likely because he is so experienced with the transmission. I am sure Sounder and Rod have seen many posts as they frequent the board and are giving good advise to prepare some guages. It would be helpful to know which gears feel like they are trying and if the non functioning gears cause the tractor to die or act like nuetral. It would also be good to confirm the loss of reverse and report what happens when the selector is in N.

I'm only trying to help you get the needed info for the SOS gurus, but I will follow this thread as I am trying to learn as much as I can. I'm sure someone will be along soon.

Best of Luck, Chris

[/color:c4c2070c68]PS If you have the original transmission in your tractor, the supplement is not the proper manual for that transmission.

[/color:9f959b80aa] Yep! Get out the guages. My guess, from this end of the computer, would be control valve problems. If you have the original transmission in your tractor "whatever it is", the ORC, B1, C1 & C2 are working to provide 9 & 10. My guess is B2 & B3 not working properly. This might also indicate a problem in the interlock cover rather than the control valve. C3 may or may not be wroking. Get 3 300 lb pressure guages and plug them in to the test ports at the band servos. Follow the check out proceedure in the book. My guess is B1 will be normal , but B2 & B3 will not.
Will it go to Park with the engine running or does it just go to nuetral there too?

It's probably a fix you can do without a split, but that's a guess from this end of the puter. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks Larry. I should have said that I have the shop manual for the 800/801 and the suppliment for the 4000. I can't tell right now which gears it kind of "shuttered" in, amd its going to be a few days befor I can get back to it to check the park thing. What bugged me is that it quit over night.

This seems to be going around. If you look at the posts since Saturday you will find two threads on this very problem. Saturday on my 801 SOS I lost all of the gears and PhilC lost the gears on his sos.

The other thing to check is to make sure the PTO works. Mine did not and the advice the guys on the board gave me require the tractor to be split. Friction clutch, input shart, or pump was what my suggestions were.

I called and my local New Holland/Ford dealer, and the guy I talked to claimed to be very familiar with 801 SOS's and they should have the part in stock to fix it. They picked it up today. Over the phone he was guessing it was the same problem the guys here suggested. I worried about what the estimate is going to be.

Good Luck

Thanks Troy, but mine runs like a scared rabbit in 9 and 10. No way can it be the limiting clutch or the coupler. In My limited knowledge,I'm wondering about the band #1 servo or control valve maybe sticking. Worked great when shut off last night.

Time for the gauges Ken.... Check out the pressures according to your book. That's about all I know about them, but I don't think you're getting off easy on this one. Hope I'm wrong.

The SOS guru's will be along in a minute to tell you what/where to start.. but I'll help them out a little to get you ready.. cuz' their gonna ask you to get a pressure gauge so you can check the servo's. So go dig up that gauge.. cuz you will need it to start telling them the readings..
