I have once again returned to the land of wisdom for some advice. My ford 5000 (with power assist steering)when the steering wheel is turned either way there is about a full turn on the wheel before anything happens, then the power steering cylinder, and the steering parts connected to it move up and down about 2 inches.( I am refering to the unit under the radiator)inside the pedistal The questions I have this time are 1) Does anyone have an idea as to what may be worn out or broken in there? 2) Does anyone have a exploded parts view that they might share with me on this? I have the repair manual from ford but it doen't have a very good view or description. 3) Where might I purchase a power steering resivoir tank? This is a self contained pump/tank. The one on my tractor has been braized, patched, fiberglassed,jb welded, and who knows what other kind of material was used on it. It still leaks and has gotta go. Any replies will be helpful and appreciated. Thanks to everyone here.

If it is the older model with the 'slave' cylinder in under the radiator it is likely caused by more than one issue. There is a pivot bushing/pin setup under the radiator that could be worn out, as well as more moving parts around the cylinder which in my case are suspect. Been a couple years since I tore mine apart to replace that bushing, and large pin. That was quite a job as you have to remove the radiator and even then it takes some maneuvering to get that bushing out, and said some bad things in the process. I intended on doing an R&R on the cylinder while I was at it, but finally tired of the mess, and needed to get it back in service so it there it is. Not as bad now, but still sloppy, and with the loader on it is a handfull and don't attempt anything quick or fancy. From what I have read it is simply a bad design, and not very easy to service. My cylinder is also leaking, but I am not ready to tear that bear back down any time soon and figure I can put some fluid in from time to time and let-er leak, and 'herd' the tractor around for a while. I love the 5000 otherwise, but hate that steering system. If I ever get the chance I would like to buy a newer 5000 with the newer style steering and sell this one.

i also have a copy of the ford manual for this tractor if its pre 1975, i thought the diagrams were reasonably good.

I assume you are in Berkshire England. If not ignore the rest of this.

A suggestion for spare parts for it would be www.robertwraightltd.com, Richard Pocock in Berwick St John's, Empire tractors, Frank S Foot and sons, or if you buy a copy of Tractor and Machinery quite a few of the advertisers in this magazine will do parts for this tractor.

Hope this is of some help

I don't know too much about that steering setup since I've never worked on it, so take this for wht it's worth.....
If you are turning the wheel a good amount before you ge movement from the pitman arm, then the first problem is in the steering box. That may be and adjustment... but more likely bad bearings. Again, I've never worked on that box.
Below that, there could be a combination of bad ball joints or possibly more bad bearings/bushings in the forward pivot.

The easiest way to get the exploded parts digrams is to go to newholland.com/na and go into the parts section, look up your year 5000 with the steering setup it has. You'll get the full exploded diagrams and part numbers from PAL. Print them if you wish.

So far as the tank is concerned.... It's not often that the tanks go bad. It's usually the pump. If the pump is otherwise good, then I'd just go to a Ford/NewHolland dealer, or several if you must. Somebody must have changed a pump and held onto the old parts; the resevoir can being one fo the parts. I know I've got 2 or 3 of those cans kicking around here for various tractors, and they're only from MY tractors. A dealer ought to have them by the dozen. If not a salvage yard will. Good luck.
