Location of the serial number on a 901?

I recently bought a Ford 901 (at least that's what the hood decals say) but I can't locate a serial number on the engine. I am suspicious of the decals because this tractor has a Select-o-Speed transmission and I thought the middle model number of SOS tractors was supposed to be a "7". Also, I ordered a starter drive for a 901 and the drive does not seem to be the correct one. Although the drive installs on the old starter, when used, it locks back against the starter and locks the starter up. Any assistance on the possible location of a serial number on this tractor will be appreciated.

Here's a photo of the s/n location on an 800 series. Your numbers should be in the same location.

Jim, thanks for the photo. I have sanded, scratched and wire-brushed the area you show in your photo but to no avail. Seems like the numbers on my tractor have long since disintegrated. I suppose it is no wonder someone put the wrong decal on the hood.

Now I've got to figure out why the starter is doing what it is doing. I'm thinking there is supposed to be some sort of a thin washer or spacer on the starter shaft between the starter housing and the starter drive. As my dealings have primarily been with 8ns, I'm a shop manual short when it comes to the 800 series.

The starter on the 901 series is the same as the 800 and 801 series and pretty much all the 4 cylinders.
The serial number is on the left side bellhousing next to the starter.

I'll have to look again but I don't recall any numbers near the starter. Is that a "stamped" number? The only number I can find that even looks like a serial number is molded into the block on the right side (see last photo in the series).

I see it as an 881 with propane fuel. But, I have been drinking, Haaaaa aaaaa ! Is that a Paulson loader? Fun Tractor all the same...My 881 gas has # on left side.flat serface in front of the starter. Just saw this posting. Cool! Hope it's as fun as my 881

Hey, I just looked at your photos. That is NOT a 901. Your decal is bogus. You have an 801 series, either a model 871 or 881. Model and serial number location is still the same.

8ns,

yes you are looking for stamped numbers. Model and serial number should be stamped on a flat horizontal surface just behind and above the starter. Might need a wire brush to find it.

901 is the series designation. 981 and 971 are specific models within that series. Providing that is what you have your starter drive should work. Maybe you got a bad one? Anything is possible.

8ns,

I have a 901 SOS as well and the 901 series are the stickers often used. The model number will be a 971 or 981 assuming you have a single speed or two speed PTO respectively. The model and serial number should be on a flat spot just above and behind the starter. That's the info. you need to find out exactly what you have. I'm no help on the starter issue.
