I have an 861 Diesel 12volt tractor and I just noticed that the generator, unlike the generator on my 8n, does NOT have a metal band around it where the commutator / brushes are. I can actually see the comm goin 'round and brushes as well. I was a little surprised that I did not see this sooner, as I have only had the tractor a short time.
I am pretty sure the band should be there but in all the manuals I have I can't see for sure...I have a parts Manual also and there is NO seperate part # for it...
It does not appear that there was ever one on this generator ( no paint differences etc ).
Can anyone confirm for me that there should be a band there, and if so where I might get one as I don't have a part #...
Thanks....Alan

My 671 D has a band covering those slots in the genny. It's a 12 volt and I believe it to be original. you can pick one up at a gen shop or just fab one from sheet stock, shouldn't be to tough of a job, Kent

Alan:

The generators found on these old tractors are of various types and not all original.

Though I cannot speak to the 12V generators as used on the diesels, the 6V generators as used on the gassers are totally enclosed without bands.

It could be that Ford used an automotive generator on the diesels. These are air cooled and have a pulley mounted fan. Does your generator have a fan?

In any event, if it has provision for a band it probably once had one.

My 660 has a band around it.. past that i can't say.

Make one with a big hose clamp from TSC.. and a piece of metal rooffing tin.. or flashing.

....or any starter/alternator/generator rebuild shop should have one that fits.
