My 3600 has ind. pto. It has started grinding when trying to engage with load such as a rotory mower. Any ideas what I am looking at for a fix? This tractor has a cab so I hope splitting is not in the recipe!

David,

I agree with Bern. No 3600 was built with an independent PTO. They were all "live pto" independent hydraulics. I have checked back in my old sales and price lists and also the workshop manual issued by Ford to us service engineers here in England.

If you had an independent PTO it would be driven by an oil powered clutch. There are no gears to select and your handle would just operate a valve.

If you have a live PTO you actually select gears and the grind is as the teeth (splines in the case of a Ford PTO) line up.

The only Ford tractor built with an independent PTO in the small tractor range was a 4100 which was basically a 4600 with a de-rated engine and a 3600 streering and front axle.

regards

Brian

No 3600s were ever built with independant PTO. It should have the double clutch in it, meaning you need to depress the clutch pedal all the way first to engage the PTO handle without grinding.

Called around to several dealers until I found one that would say more than bring it in. The mechanic 'George' said since it will engage it is most likely a broke control valve spring. He said if the control valve was sticking it would just grind and not engage. He said this controls the hydraulic pressure when shifting and although I should be able to replace it without splitting he recommends I split the tractor and replace the PTO brake and several other parts at the same time. Parts dept. said they have the parts in stock. Looks like to replace all the mech said to will run about $550 plus I would like to replace the clutch while I have it split. Not sure if I am going to go for it or not.

Replacing the main clutch and servicing the independent PTO clutch involve splitting the tractor in two places. Behind the engine to do the main clutch, and in front of the rear axle center section to access the PTO clutch. Your description of 'grinding' as the independent PTO is engaged puzzles me.

Bern, this is an english diesel 3600 with a CAB. It has ind. pto ( a vert. pull-up lever on the left side beside the seat) No two stage clutch.
Numbers behind starter are
CH213C
8M19
B999317
which my manual shows to be a 3600 all purpose diesel vert exhaust ind 540 pto built in Basildon in Dec 19, 1978
My manual does not list any troubleshooting for the the pto but it does show the ind. pto and parts blowout. It has been working for the past year but last weekend it started grinding. Before it would just clunk when engaging then I would increase rpms. I checked the hydraulic fluid and it was full. It was changed this summer with NH134 and a new filter. But when I idle down and pull up on the pto selector it does a grrrrr rrrrclunk. It will do this whether the clutch is in or not, stopped or moving. This bothers me! I really do not want to have to split this thing.
