The car battery will work so long as the tractor starts quick and it isn't too cold. If you've got a lazy starter.... it ain't gonna work for long. You'll just go through batteries. New batteries are a big jump ahead of the old stuff, but most of the compact batteries that make big CCA numbers don't have the reserve capacity that the 4DLT has.... and that's what you need to keep that thing rolling in the cold.
For all it takes to fix the tray, you'd be time ahead to do so.

I just measured my original tray for you, maybe it will answer your question. Bottom of the tray is 19 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches. I just use a high cranking amp car battery in mine as I didn't want to pay the big bucks for the 4DLT and it works just fine for me but we don't have any cold weather here either.

easy way to do this, in the last 40 years batteries have improved a LOT, new technology has made huge strides, what used to require a 4DLT to get enough juice out of is now possible to get that same power as 40 years ago out of a battery the size of one in your car. I would take the 4DLT back and return it, and just buy a newer one that fits and has excellent cranking power and reserve capacity. after all,,it is only a 3 cylinder and not a 9000 with a six that gets hard to turn in cold weather, just my opinion though, good luck

It must have the tray for the gasoline version. You can cut the tray skin off the frame and make a new skin for this on that will fit the 4DLT. IT's length will be such that it just barely clears the intak hose at the front.
If you want you can buy a new tray too, but I think you'll find it pricey.... at least I did a number of years ago which is why I made one.

I bought a 3000 5 years ago to replace one that burned in a building. It came with a car battery that worked until cold weather. I also bought a 4dlt to use and the tray was too small,my NH dealer said the gas tractor used the small size. I was able to use the tray from the burned tractor.

You can buy a battery that fits the tray or buy the tray that fits the 4DLT. If you buy a battery that fits your tray be careful of the height of the battery as I believe the 1000's require a low profile battery. You don't want to close the hood and have it make contact with the + and - terminals at the same time. Holy Fireworks, Batman!

If I remember right the tray in my diesel 3000 was about as long as the motor and the 4DLT fit it like a glove. I wonder if yours may have been replaced with a gas version.
