There are 2 foot pedals on the right and 1 foot pedal on the left. The left pedal is pivoted just below the gear shifter but has a rod that seems to go to the clutch area. On the right side, the leftmost pedal also appears to have a rod that goes into the clutch area. The rightmost pedal seems to be the brake pedal for both brakes. I am confuised about 2 pedals going to the clutch. Can someone explain this whole setup to me. Also I need to know how the 5 speed gear shifer is to be operated.Appears kind of confusing to me. The owner wasn't there with me so I didn't drive because I didn't want to chance crashing it. Is there someplace I can look(besides the archives). Thanks.

Good morning Joe; the two pedals on the right of the transmision are your left and right brake pedals. You can use them both at the same time or one at a time to make tighter turns. For the left pedal there is a shaft that extends through the bellhousing of the transmission to the left side. There is an actuating rod attached that extends back to the brake camshaft. The right brake pedal is connected directly to the camshaft. The pedal on the left of the transmission is the clutch pedal. It also uses a actuating rod that goes forward to connect to a shaft that goes through the bellhousing and actuates the clutch fork.

On the top of the tranmission near the shifter you;ll see a shift diagram. Just below the shifter you'll the letter "N" indicating neutral position. There is a indicator on the base of the shifter. When this is aligned with the "N" it is in neutral. The five speed shifter is operated by pushing (from the neutal position) the lever back for 1st, or back for 2nd. For 3rd and reverse you pull up and push forward for 3rd and back for reverse. For 4th and 5th you push all the way down and then forward for 4th and back for 5th. Sounds confusing, but try it and you'll figure it out. Hope this helps.

Thanks Glenn. I was looking at the pictures and video I took and wasn't sure about it. The gear markings were clearly printed But just didn't know for sure. I will keep your posts for reference when I go check it out again(if it's not already sold).

Joe; Hope you find the tractor you want. I have an 850 and it is a good tractor. Just for info, the diagram John sent your is of a "typical" brake and clutch set up. The clutch pedal for the 850 and possibly other models pivots from a post which bolts to the transmission near the rear. A rod is used to go forward to the clutch shaft.

Yes, after the feedbacks I received it cleared it up and agrees with the pictures I took. You know I was originally going for a NAA because it would be just fine for what I need, mostly brushogging and a scoop. But they are more difficult to find and the prices are just as much as for a 600 or 800. So I figured I will continue looking for any one of these and settle for the best in condition and price that I can find. Another reason why it's taking me so long is that I already have a CUB in the storage box and no room for another one. I am trying to sell the Cub(on my land in Herkimer, NY) and also a 2N in my driveway. No luck yet. The wife wants the one in the driveway gone!

A 640 will be virtually identical to a NAA in function.. a 650 will get you the 5 spd. A 660 will get you a 2 stage clutch.

Jump to the 8XX and you get about 15 more hp or so, on top of the other changes I mentioned.

IE... go for a 660 or 860 / 661/861 ( later models are more likely to have power steering.. etc..

BTW.. i have both a 660 and an 850.. I love them.. the 850 is a brute. I move round hay bales with ease with it.

I believe the video is 640x480. Yes , I'm still too slow to post pictures here. Also how do I leave my e-mail OPEN without writing it out? Thanks.
Joe

Here is a picture of the 850. How do I post multiple pictures? I tried to put the video in the 'tractor' photos but after 10 minutes it still didn't load. I think it is about 4 minutes long. How would I go about posting the video? Thanks.

If the top cover of the transmission.... in reply to GlenIdaho, 07-07-2007 06:45:38
is covered with oil, grease, dirt or a combination of the three you won"t see the shift pattern that is embossed into the top cover. You will need to take a wire brush and scraper to remove the gunk so you can see the shift pattern.

The far right pedal is for the right wheel brake. While it may look like the rear rod goes threw the case to the left brake it does not.

The left pedal on the right side is for the left brake. It is connected by a rod that goes threw the clutch housing the the left side by the clutch pedal.

The pedal on the left is the clutch. It is on the brake rod but is not connected. It just uses the brake rod comming out the clutch housing as a piviot point.

Thanks, John in LA. That diagram clears it all up. I'll keep it in my files.
