3000 Plug Wires

So I rebuilt the engine of my '66 3000. It was a fantastic experience and I really loved doing the job. Now I have a little problem. I am trying to figure out where the plug wires go on the distributor cap. I know where the coil and #1 go, but where do 2 and 3 go?

I finally got the carb on and the rebuilt governor along with all of the associated linkages. I have gas to the carb, but I cannot get the tractor to run. It will not even fire (but is floods really well!)

I pulled the plugs and they were 'gassy'. I checked each and I am getting the BRIGHTEST BLUE spark and a nice 'CRACK' when each fires, but the tractor just won't run.

Any help is greatly appreciated. As I look at this question, I am thinking to myself, what an insipid question, but the only bad question is the one not asked.

Yahoo, and thanks for the support. This discussion board is a life saver! I did have the plug wires on right, but had the distributor installed a little off.

I was told to find TDC for #1, then put the distributor in with the rotor about 8 degrees BTDC. Well, dummy me, I had the rotor about 8 degrees ATDC. Not gonna run there!

I fixed my blunder, and bada boom bada bing, VAHROOM! Ran like a champ. Now all I have to do is fix a few gas leaks (fuel pump gasket) and install the sheet metal, radiator, etc.

Makes you feel pretty darn good to know you did it all yourself!

Thanks again for all the help with my engine rebuild. Only took 3 months (grin.)

Michael,
I recently changed the plug wires on my 4000 and quite sure I remember thinking how easy it is to get the plugs wires correct. With the distributor and cap on correctly, the wire neasest the front of the distributor cap was #1, the rear most wire was #3, with #2 in the middle. I don't even remember thr rotation, just that the front to back layout was #1, #2, #3, just like the cylinders.

I guess the question is about firing order. If it isn't known, the rocker-arm cover and distributor cap can be taken off. The engine can be rotated till each cylinder is near the top of a compression stroke, and the distributor rotor can be checked to see which plug will fire. If it isn't obvious, I guess continuity checking with an ohmmeter could be done. An off the top of head thought about a rebuilt engine that has spark and gas but won't start is the compression. It's common to back off the valve clearances quite a bit when first cranking a rebuild. If the clearances aren't checked, a rebuild where the head was milled or a different head gasket used may produce zero clearance and some valves may never close. However, I'm not sure an engine would be prone to flooding in such a case.
