I am replacing the proof meter (tach) on my 1956 860 ford tractor and the new meter has 2 connections, and the old has only one. The cable that connects to the center connects controls the hours meter, but where does the other conneection for rpm's (pto) and speed (mph) connect to? My manual (shop manual) doesn't even list the proof meter.
Any help would be appreciated as I am new to tractor repairs / maintenance.

Run the wire to the same circuit that runs your headlights....usually to the light switch. The lamp that is in there is a 12V lamp. If your tractor is still 6V you'll want to pull that lamp and replace with the equivalent 6V lamp. I took my 12V lamp to a NAPA store and they crossed it to a 6V lamp. I can't remember the part number, but my feeble brain wants to say GE55. Could be a random memory from some other project in my past.

If your tractor doesn't have lights, it won't hurt anything to just leave the electrical connection unconnected. You just won't have a lighted gauge, but you're used to that.

The electrical connection is for an internal lamp that the original tach does not have.

Look at your proof meter again, the center connection is for your cable, the one below it is for electrical connection, pull the black grommet out and it will expose a screw connection for your wire.

If you have two places to attach a cable to your meter you have the wrong meter. The same cable that runs your hour meter should run your tach.
