Ok...another one...850 runs great, but have to pull the negative cable off battery so it does not run down the next time I use her. No lights on this tractor..It was converted to 12V. Old timers let me know something here...thanks...George W. out...

As Sound says it most likely wired wrong and you need to rewire the #1 terminal on the alternator by putting in a diode or light bulb. My self I use radio shack part #276-1661 diodes when ever I set one up with 12 volt battery

As Rod said.. if it is a 3 wire convert.. then #2 gets hooked tot he charge stud.. #1 goes thru a marker lamp to the ignition.. or thru a diode.. etc..

To find your short, take a tester lamp and pull the negative terminal.. put your test lamp inline there... if there is a short, the lamp will light up showing current is flowing... then start at the wiring farthest from the battery.. disconnect 1 wire at a time.. when your lamp goes out.. you just pulled the line with a load on it..

I'd be willing to bet that it was converted with some type of 3 wire alternator which requires a switched excitor/idiot light wire. I've at times hooked all 3 wires together.... lead 1 and 2 are both hooked to the Bat terminal on the alternator if it's a Delco. I can never remember which one needs to be switched, but I think it's terminal 1... I like to run them through an oil pressure switch on the gassers.

Otherwise, take an ohm meter, disconnect the battery, and see where the load leads you....
