Ford 601 dies for no reason

Out mowing today with grandpa's 1960 631, it would die for no particular reason, just like someone shut off the key. No spits or sputters. It wouldn't crank again unless I turned the key off and back on, then it fires right back up again, and runs fine. No more than 10 or 15 seconds of cool down time.

First died about 15 minutes into mowing, off and back on, running great. Then 45 minutes, then an hour, then 30 mins, no particular pattern at all. Do you suppose the key switch could be bad? I don't know if the 8n runtime issues apply to the hundred series as well, but this doesn't seem to match any of those either. At the moment, the problem isn't a major issue, but is something I'd like to fix. Thanks for any help.

Kevin

If I were to bet I would bet the iginition switch is bad. I went through the same trouble on 4000 gasser. I ordered and installed a new electronic deal to replace the points I had the same thing in there and thought it had gone bad. Changed the plugs, and then a new coil. It started up and run pretty good. Then it died as I was shreding with it. I turned the key off and then on, and relized as long as I kept pressure on the key the tractor would run. New swith and now no problem.

Dieing like that sure sounds electrical.. I'd suspect the key switch may have corrosion.. and turning it off/on clears it a little.

Jumper around the key switch.. if that cures it.. replace it.

It may be necescary to jumper around the wirse tot he key switch if they are bad or coroded too.

Sounds like a loose wire or a wire that is about to brake. When you turn it off then back on it arcs a little and make a good connection again till you hit just the right bump etc and then off again. Check the wires at the switch, coil, and maybe even the battery area and amp gauge

You have an electrical issue somewhere. That's actually not too bad to fix as there isn't that much electrical on the machine!

Get a good meter and start looking for shorts. One prime place is the ignition switch. Inside the distributor can be another. Check for frayed wires.

I had that problem once, and it was the ignition coil. When the coil would get hot it would short out and acted like you turned the key off. As far as the time delay in you having to turn the key off to get it to crank again, that one has me puzzled.

A working charge indicator lamp on the dash will verify a working or malfunctioning ignition switch. The switch being switched off and on would indicate a condenser with a coil being the next to check. HTH
