Ford 4000 generator/voltage regulator

I have a '67 ford 4000 diesel tractor. The generator light comes on intermittently (lately more on than off); the fuel gage fluctuates as the generator light comes on and goes off. When I turn the key to the start position, it doesn’t come on until the engine is running. Is the generator going bad or is the voltage regulator to blame? Is there a way to test before I remove and take it somewhere to have it checked out?

Thanks
Allen

Go to this site. It is the best one I have found for trouble shooting a lucas generator system. Was able to fix all the problems with my 4500.

Your gen and oil pres lamp should both come on when you turn your key to run.

After you start, they should both go off.

If the gen lamp does go off.. but flickers at low rpm.. then it's likely it is about time for brushes.. or at least some commie dressing and mica trimming ( might as well do brushes while you are in there.. ).. Also.. the lucas VR are not supremly robust.. and sometimes the contacts get gunky and sticky...

I don't know how to test the gen or reg on the tractor but it sounds like your ignition switch may be the culprit.
