Id like to hear the pros and cons of this tranny. Im looking to purchase a 1966 5000, diesel, with the select-o-matic. Thanks in advance for everybodys input.

I've had early 4000 SOS about 1 yr in reply to Hittman, 07-30-2007 14:07:43
The old tractor I traded for has the SOS (Selecto-Speed). Mine had the torque limiting clutch out when I got it. Once I got it up and running I just love it for the slow 1st gear for tilling and the hydraulic clutch PTO is great to be able to not have grind gear to engage it. I think the shifting operating cables parts are difficult to find though. I'm considering a foot throttle conversion though, but, everything else about the tractor is fine. bjr

Even on a single or 2 stage clutch machine.. if you werere grinding gears to engage it.. you were doing something wrong.. or it was out of adjustment. A properly functioning dry clutch system should engage just as easy as a hyd engage... just pull a lever ( or cable ) and go...

Personally, I've never seen anything in the S-O-S that impressed me very much. They wern't called the jerk-a-matic for nothing. I'd take one 8 speed over a dozen selecto's. That said, if you like it, it matters not what I think. Just check it out and make sure it works, when warm, in all gears. Keep it maintained and it should be reliable.

I also think you'll find that the PTO on the 5000 is not part of the transmission, but is found in the rear axle center housing the same as the rest of the 5000's.... which is a good thing. It'll make for an easy swap to an 8 speed should you tire of the S-O-S.

Select - O - Speed AKA SOS

It's a 10 speed 'automatic' tranny.. up and down shift on the go.. and 2 reverse speeds.

Dash Cable pull operated independent pto.

When the SOS trannies work.. they are like sliced bread... great speed control ( better'n an 8 speed )... when they have problems.. it can be anything from a 25 cent part to a few thousand dollars. If ya got a mechanic that will work on them you are doing good.

If the one you look at is operasting in all ranges. and shows no problems.. maintain it well ( it is picky on oil ) and it will probably stay healthy for a long time. If it already has a few 'catches'... you mind find it cheaper to burn money in your fireplace to heat your house for the winter...

SOS got it's bad name fromt he first ones that came out.. field failures.. I hear there were many field repalcements... As the production went on.. so did quality and loengevity. Since the first ones hit in 59 with the 100 series.. you at least aren't on the 'front line'.

Good luck.. and test drive it cold and hot and in all ranges before you sign the check.. no need to spend money at the same rate as.. say.. howitzer shells that may have been used during the opening hours of normandy if ya don't have to...

( ps.. there are a small handfull of real SOS owner/guru's here than can help with common small problems.. and at least tell you how to troubleshoot or offer advice on how to fix or locate parts ont he 'money-pit' problems.. )

Hittman:

Late model S-O-S transmissions are just about bulletproof if they have had reasonable maintenance, i.e., oil and filter changes.

That said, selector parts can be hard to find and/or expensive.

If possible, try to load it in all gears after the transmission is up to operating temperature. Test the PTO in the same way.
