i'm trying to find rings, bearings, gaskets for my 6000 diesel. i "thought" it was a 245 cid but all i can find online for parts is for a 256 cid. does anyone know for sure if i have a 245 or 256?

kinda figured they were wrong but when i did a search for "ford 6000" in the kits section that is what came up and i did not think i had a 256 engine. so i'm guessing then that YT dont have kits for the 6000 commander. i can get some parts from my local dealer yet but was hoping to find another place that might be able to get rings, bearing, gaskets, etc.
thanks
Gary

You should look very closely at the 256 kits. I think you'll notice that it's a 4 banger, and applicable to the 5000, 66/6700, 76/7700...
Don't know the cid on the 6000, but I think you're looking at the wrong kits.

 223 cu.in. 6 cylinder- is it a car engine? in reply to Dave H IA, 08-03-2007 11:14:18
I think I read somewhere that the 223 used in the 6000 was actually a car engine. Does anyone know if this is true?

I am reasonably sure that the 6000 engine was based on the medium duty truck engine and is slightly different than the car engine. The diesel uses larger bolts for the main bearing caps.

Not sure yet...my dad has a '56 Ford Mainliner with a 223. If I can ever get the dang hood open, I'll confirm or deny this!

I'd like to find out myself...I'm thinking IF the 223 car and 223 tractor engine were the same blocks, then a 223 car engine MIGHT fit into a x00, x01, or a pre-'65 x000 tractor without TOO much work. I'm not a big fan of flatheads (too young, I reckon), but I think an OHV 6-cylinder on a little grey and red tractor would be pretty slick!

Got to thinking about this while I was milking this morning. There were Funk 6-cylinder kits that used an 215 c.i. OHV industrial engine. The flathead 6's were 226 or 227 cubic inches, depending on where you get your infomation. The OHV industrials were introduced (I think) in '52. If by some chance the car block is the same as the 6000's, (more likely for a truck or industrial block to match) I'd think you'd need an adapter plate for the bellhousing, plus a taller and longer hood, some way of attaching the front axle, and probably some kind of frame rails to put one into a pre-65 4-cylinder. And a governor.

I've heard that the 6000 gs engine was the same as a car engine too, but I doubt it. I do know that it WON'T bolt into an x00, x01, or 4-cylinder x000. The 6000 used a completly unique trans.

Fordfarmer...I'm sure not trying to start an argument, but are you sure? I've looked pretty hard at the SOS trannies in both our '63 4000 and our '63 6000. Other than the fact that the 6000 has an external tranny filter, they look virtually identical. Bellhousing bolt pattern looks to be the same between the two tractors, which is where I came up with the nutty idea of a 6-cylinder swap in the first place.

You're probably right about the front needing reinforcement, even if everything else were to work out.
