My tractor has a serial number of 850-52676 Is there a way to tell if it has a vane or piston hydraulic pump by the number? or any other way besides tearing it apart.

Thanks,
MG

a few years ago i got a piston pump from a tractor salvage yard for my 960. when i installed it the hitch lifted about half as fast. i compared the new pump to old and the pistons were half as big as the ones in old pump. what tractors had the smaller piston pump?

The early 1955 600 and 800 series Ford tractors came equipped with a vane pump. Starting with s/n 66849 they came equipped with a piston pump which continued to the end of the x01 and early 2000/4000 series. However, many of the early vane pumps were subsequently changed out for the more reliable piston pump so you could have either. Your serial number is pretty close to mine (57804) and I still have a vane pump that still works (gasp!).

Telling the difference is easy. They look quite a bit different visually. Here's a photo of a vane pump like your tractor had the day it left the factory.

And here's what a piston pump looks like.

As you can see, the vane pump has a square body and the piston pump is more round. The photo showing the piston pump happens to be an NAA rather than an 800, but you can see what the pump looks like.

Michael; your serial number indicates that your tractor is a 1955. The SN for that year began at 10615 and ended with 77640. Previous posts indicate Ford stopped using vane pumps in 55. You may or may not have one. Here are so diagrams of the two. Hope they helps.

Here's a diagram of the van and piston type pumps.
