All, looking at a 640 that has definitely seen better days. It is currently stuck with bad front tires and ok back tires. All sheetmetal is there. Owner states that the valve cover and oil pan are off the tractor. I've seen several pictures and plan to visit in the near future to put my eyes on it. Looks like it has been sitting for a while so will probably need new gas tank and tranny/hydro fluid. What is something like this worth? Man is asking 1000 OBO for it. I personally don't think its worth 1k since it will in the least need some pretty significant $$ spent on engine, tires, fluids. All advice is appreciated.

I agree with Old.. at BEST it's a 'stuck' parter. With the oil pan off.. figure the crank, and maybe the rods to be useless.. probably need cyl liners too..

Can't tell nothing about the rest of the tractor without the engine..

I'd give 400.. maybee 500$ if I needed specific parts from the rear end that i thought were good..

See link for a pic of machine. One thing that jumps out at you is the oil pan.

From what you say about that tractor is maybe worth $250-500 and $500 is max. If the pan has been off for very long the engine will almost be junk unless you do a complete rebuild and that will cost you at least $1000 to do then you also have no idea what if any thing else will work.

Judging by your handle, I'm guessing you are in South Carolina. While I am sure there are some regional differences, here in the Midwest, such a tractor could easily bring $1000. With decent rear tires/rims, solid sheetmetal, rebuildable engine head/block, hydraulic pump, etc., someone willing to part this machine out would easily make back their initial investment and more.

In the condition you describe, I don't think $1,000 is a good deal if you plan to resurrect the hulk. You're going to spend a lot more money getting it ready to run. Even if it was free, you'd probably be money ahead to pass on it and buy a similar tractor that's ready to go.

Now if you are going to part it out you can make that $1000 back plus some.

If it were me, I'd offer $500 and be willing to go as high as $750 with the idea that if I can't get some things fixed easily, I won't spend a lot more on it before parting it out and using the money to buy a better tractor.

I've never failed to make $1500 - $2000 on a parts tractor I've bought for $500, but it takes time and work to get that much back....not to mention storage space for all those parts!
