iown a 971 row crop,sn 36683 or 56683 (really light numberS) AT ONE TIME IT WAS PAINTED GOLD EVEN BEHIND THE DASH. BUT 1 WENT TO A TRACTOR SHOW AND IN TALKING TO A FELLOW HE SAID LOTS OF THE REGULAR ISSUE 971 WERE PAINTED BY PREVIOUS OWNERS. IS THERE ANY OTHER NUMBERS OR MARKINGS THAT WILL HELP TO REALLY IDENTIFY IF MINE IS ORIGINAL GOLD OR A PAINT OVER BY SOMEONE?THANKS

Your serial # is of no help because I feel it is wrong. Those serial numbers were built in 1958 and the SOS did not come out till mid Jan of 1959.
If you want to try and date it by part date codes look at the link below and tell us what #'s you find.
You can also search Tony Jacobs and Gold tractors on this board for more info. Tony is the guy you need to talk to as he knows alot about the gold tractors.

Bullhunk,

I also have a 971 that I am working on and looking forward to using. With yours being a 58' it may well be an original "gold demonstrator" as they were provided to the dealers in the beginning to kick off the SOS transmission. I don't know of any way to find out for sure.

Chris
