i am a newby as far as tractors go , so i'm
kinda learning as i go, just bought a 57 ford 800
in pretty good shape. needs brakes and oil pan
gasket and rear fenders and a paint job. other then that its pretty solid. i have worked on hot rods and 18 wheelers for 28 plus years but farm
tractors are new to me so i may need some help.
1st thing is rear fenders, where is a good souce to find these babys at? and the other is the color, this 800 has a red hood and i dont think
thats right, all i have seen have the gray hood.
found brake shoes thru a friend,
any advice would be great,
thanks

Here are some photos of the different fender styles that were used. I have these posted in the Parts & Pieces Gallery.

1955 fender
1956 & 1957 fender
601/801 Fender
The first two fenders look the same to most people. The size and shape of the skin is the same. Only difference is the support structure. Any of the above fenders will bolt up on your tractor, but only the last x01 style fender is currently available as a new repop part. I've heard of the earlier fenders being on the drawing boards but I haven't seen any yet.

Also, the 8N/NAA fenders will also bolt up. They are smaller in size and can be detected by the horizontal stiffening rib across the middle. Look a photos of any 8N to see what I mean.

Ditto what the others saisd on fenders. If yuo are not showing it, but just want to keep mud off yer shirt.. get the cheaper no script fenders. I'm sure they have 801 fenders here.

Check them brakes.. might just need adjustment.

Same info on paint. if you just knocking the rust off and want some color.. alkyd enamils are easy to paint with and cheap. You don't get the superior finish and lifespan as an acrylic or urethane.. but then those are more expensive, and a bit harder to paint with too.

Terry; Original fenders for a 57 800 are hard to find. They do not yet make after market though I have heard they are in the works. You'll find many 800's that have the 801 style of fenders, what some call the "crown" style. I found mine (original style)in a salvage yard and with a little welding and body work they are in good shape. If you want to stay original your best option is to search the salvage yards for a decent pair. I'd offer this advice, be careful not to buy sight unseen and be careful of photos, they don't tell the whole story. You can also watch ebay as they appear there once in a while. Or, if you're good at body work, repair the ones you have. The other option is that you go with the 801 style. They are after market, some with the Ford script and some without. With the script the sell for about $150 each, without about $100 each. This site sells them as do various other parts suppliers. Do a search on the internet for Ford Tractor parts.

Regarding the oil leak, make sure it is the gasket and not the rear main seal. If it is the rear main seal you'll see on the bottom of the transmission an inspection plate with a hole in the center and a cotter key protruding. If engine oil is leaking out there, it's most likely the rear main. Ford used rope seals and some have been successful in replacing them without splitting the tractor, but it's a tedious job.

Regarding the paint, if it is an 800 the hood should have been gray. The newer powermasters had red hoods. I'd double check the serial number and model number. Look on the flat spot on the transmission just behind the starter and you'll see a 3 digit number. This will be the model number of your tractor. The number below it will be the serial number. You can then use this site (left column) under "serial number" to find the year of your tractor. You can get the correct color at your CNH dealer at a reasonable cost. Hope this helps you out.

Terry; The paint scheme would be the same. Making a decision as to what paint to use depends on what you are doing. If you want to just spruce it up a bit the CNH paint would do well. You can even get it at TSC or even TISCO. I believe this site sells it too. If you're restoring the tractor and want to spend some more money then you can go with epoxy primers and acrylic urethane etc. There is a lot of info in the archives of this site concerning correct colors and the various paints used. Some very good information. You might want to check the "Paint and body work" forum on this sight as well. You'll find good advice from folks that know. Also, when buying paint from CNH make sure it is for your year of tractor. I believe they changed the shade of red in 58 to a more orangish red.

Regarding the fenders, it again goes to what you want to do. I have not yet seen the original style fenders in after market. In my experience of searching for fenders the catalogues will list fenders that are for 800s, but are the 801 style that will of course fit the 800, but they are not the original style. I have a spare set for a 55 800 but they need a lot of work. I was planning on refurbiishing them this winter.
There have been several posts about fenders. Jim UT has posted photos showing the difference. Hope this helps you out. Have fun with your tractor.

It is a 1955 model built in late 1954 in reply to banjoman, 08-26-2007 06:58:57
Just like cars and trucks, next year's model tractors are introduced in the fall of the current year.
