Ford 1920 PTO/Drive Clutch Problems

I have an issue with my late model 1920. My PTO clutch won't disengage. I can make it engage/disengage by adjusting the clutch pedal free-play, but then the drive clutch won't engage. In order to get the drive clutch to engage, I need to adjust it almost to the end of the rod. In that position, the drive clutch works okay, but the PTO clutch won't disengage.

I was able to access the clutch through the inspection holes this weekend. As someone on the archive suggested, they are underneath where the loader mounts. The one on the left side can be used to loosen the nuts on the clutch adjustment bolts. You'll have to use the one on the right side to actually adjust the bolt clearance.

It is not fun, by the way, but it can be done.

In my case, the clearances actually were fine. I buttoned it all back up only to find that I changed nothing. When adjusted so the PTO clutch can be engaged/disengaged, the drive clutch won't engage. When I adjust it (nearly all the way out on the adjustment rod) so that the drive will engage/disengage, the PTO won't disengage.

It occured to me yesterday that it could be that the clutch housing won't slide on the bolts. I think that's why the clearances are there. (can anyone confirm this?) My bolts were pretty corroded and mucked up. So, I'm thinking about going back in and trying to free up the bolts so that the housing slides on them properly. I really don't want to split the tractor....

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

I just bought a 97 model 1920 and I am having the same problem. The tractor only has 1500 hours so I would assume the clutch is not wore out. I talked with New Holland and they stated the clutch pedal should have 1" of free play at the top. I am going to adjust it tomorrow and see what happens. They stated this should fix it, but if it doesn't that means the clutch plate is warped which means a trip to the dealer since I don't have the time or the room to tear it down and replace it myself. Luckly the guy I bought it off of is going to cover the repairs if they are needed.

Thanks for the suggestions.

When I pulled the inspection covers off this weekend, the clutch discs didn't look particularly worn. Originally, I thought the problem was that the PTO clutch disc was stuck to the pressure plate, but that was not the problem.

Does anyone know if the clutch housings are supposed to slide on the adjusting bolts? I can open up the inspection ports again and engage/disengage the clutch to see if they do.

Thanks again for the responses.... keep the ideas coming!

Aside from what the othrs said about the clutch being worn past serviceable life.. i have only one idea.

Any chance the little flip down lever on th clutch pedal is down, and only letting you drop to the first clutch section out?

My wife did this once and told me the pto wouldn't engage... took me a while to catch it..

It may be that your transmission clutch disc is worn requiring extra throw on the presssure plate. If most of the pedal travel is used for the trans clutch, ther isn't enough travel left for the PTO clutch.

I have a 1910 that when I bought it the PTO would not disengauge. I found that the little drain at the bottom of housing had plugged up with gunk. The previous owner had pressure washed the tractor ALOT.
This caused everything but the drive clutch to seize up. My dad and I broke the little tractor in half, clutch changing procedure in book, cleaned all the parts then reinstalled. It"s all worked for about 10 1/2 years now without fail.
FYI, a clutch rebuilder quoted my $35 for drive clutch and $45 for PTO clutch. So don"t fall for NH high prices.
I you do take it apart you"ll need to make a clutch compression tool. I can give you my pans for mine.
Jim
