Question: for the somewhat mechanic, trying to fix a 850 (1956) Ford, what kind of manual would you recommend I purchase? Thanks everyone...
*One more! Under the seat, there is a small hexagon type nut, its not the transmission, hyd, rear end, but just under the seat attached on a small square cover?

I would recommend the Ford factory shop manual over the I&T FO-20. It has 422 pages and has a red and black cover. It is available as a reprint for about $20 almost every day on ebay. You can sometimes find it a bit cheaper from any of a number of online tractor parts vendors.

If you find an original in good shape it might cost a bit more. I like the original over the reprint because the hydraulic system diagrams are color coded. The reprint is in black & white and sometimes it's hard to distinguish between the different shades of gray. But that's really about the only difference.

There is a rectangular option cover on the top of your hyd cover with a plug in it.. It's for tapping hyds off the internal hyd system.

The trans fill is by the gear shifter. the hyd fill is under your left leg.. and the diffy fill is the big cap on the back behind the seat.

get an owners manual and the service manual of your choice.

The I&T manual is ok for maintenance items and small repairs.. if you are doing a rebuild or more involved repairs.. get the ford manual..

When you say "tapping hyd"...do you mean maybe adding a front end loader and such? Thanks also for the great info on what kind of manual I would need..Paul

Yes, you can tap hyd pressure from your tractor's hyd topcover / engine mounted pump.

Keep in mind that it is about 4gpm and maybee 1700 psi.. still.. for a homeowner who needs a fel and is not concerned about blinding speed.. it is sufficient to run a loader. I have a loder on my ford 660 and my ford 850.. both off the cover.

Now.. you have 3 options for the loader plumbing:

Option 1, get a ford style spool valve that goes on the cover.. either single or dual spool. These valves are generally expensive, and cost inthe 350-700$ range. You can either get them with or without detent on the valve levers. This option has 2 subsets:
1, run the laoder right off the spool.. IE.. get a non detent single spool valve for a loader with a trip bucket.. or get a dual spool valve for a full hyd loader.
2, get a detent style single valve set and hook remote QD's to it.. so you have a remote outlet. Buy a cheap Open center spool valve set for a log splitter and run your loader from this. It's probably cheaper to buy the single remote ford valve plus a decent log splitter valve than buying the ford dual valve.. probably by a couple hundred bucks.

2, Chain your upper lift arms to the axle, and then remove that plug from that rectangular cover, run a line from there to a cheap log splitter valve with an open center, and then plumb a return line back to the hyd sump by drilling out the hyd fill cap and tapping it for a 90' elbow / return fitting. Lifting your 3pt lever will direct fluid thru this valve and to the sump untill you move the spools for your laoder.

3, If it is a trip style loader.. you don't even need a spool valve.. just run the line from the top cover to the loader lift cyls, chain 3pt arms down, and lift 3pt handle to lift loader.. lower 3pt handle to drop loader..

Last 2 options makes you loose the use of your 3pt lift, while using the ford style valve does not.

I would not recomend the I.T. manual to anyone. It is ok for some things but leaves out alot of important information.
A true Ford manual is the way to go. The link is to the manual on CD. Has everything you will need and then some. (this is the one I have) And at $30 you can not beat the price.

I-T FO 20 is a good one but to really cover it all you need a couple of brands of manual because they all leave out just a little bit. As far as that plug its the peassure port for the hyds to test PSI of the hyd system

I'd recommend a Ford Shop Manual and Master Parts Manual. The Shop Manual tells you how Ford did it and the Parts Manual shows some decent diagrams of all the parts and how they go together. They sell them on this site or you can go to e-bay or search other Old Ford Tractor parts sites. If you're new to tractors and want to know how to use the various features of your tractor, buy an Owner's Manual too. I have found all three very helpful. The manuals go for about $20.00 each. Have fun with your tractor.
