Just inherited a 1968 3 Cyl/Gas 2000 Ford tractor with a 5ft bush hog. What are the proper steps in connecting and adjusting the shredder and tractor using the 3pt hookup. I have the tail wheel on the shredder adjusted where I want it. The article "Choosing, Mounting, and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower" by Francis Robinson under the Articles section is good, but leaves out adjusting the upper link of the 3pt hookup.

forgot to add:

if you use height limit chains, adjust them when you are setting the front height on the mower deck.

And if you are using stabilizer chains or bars.. get them adjusted to keep the mower from swinging side to side when you make a turn. If you don't have them, and you get movement onthe mower in a turn it can be hard on the lift pins.. make or buy a set.. etc.

I like to set mine as follows.

get on flat ground, leave toplink off, lift 3pt to the desired cutting height. Adjust tailwheel so that rear is slightly higher than front.

Install toplink. If there is a slot or flexible link on the mower, install the toplink so that it is halfway thru it's travel on each side.. that way if you hit a bump or dip, you have some give each way.

Check your pto shaft.. make sure there is enough overlap when it is extended.. and make sure it does not bottom out wheen lifted and/or fully contracted.

Great time to check gearbox lube and greas ethe joints on the pto shaft.

Check them blades and bolts to.. just jack stands and timber to support the mower, not hyds alone.

Also check side to side adjustment on the deck height, as most tractors have an adjustable side link.

If you have an ORC or slip clutch, ensure it is serviced. if you use a shear bolt.. ensure it is in place and the propper grade ( gr2 if unsure ).

a 2000 should spin a 5' mower like no tomorrow.

Be safe and have fun.

Post back if ya got anymore questions.
