Now that I finally got the steering wheel off my 72 3000 I'm busy trying to rebuild the steering system. But...Does anyone know how to get the 3" wide steel plates out of the steering adapter housing? The local ford dealer advised to put a nut on the sector gear and knock the #*%@ out of it. But I'm skittish. These plates look pressed in and I don't want to damage them or the steering gears. I need them out to correctly set the sector shafts. Thanks

Well, if you won't take the advice of the local Ford (New Holland, by the way) dealer, why would you listen to a bunch of strangers? Run the nut back on the sector shaft flush with the end of the threads, and drive the cap and shaft out using a large brass drift or hunk of oak along with a BFH. The best way to anchor the steering box down is to leave it installed on the tractor till it is disassembled.
