I have a 4000 SOS Diesel 1963 or 64. It is a good tractor with a problem. It seems too good to part out, but having one half of the transmission work makes me wonder what the real value of the tractor is. I do know how much trouble SOS can be. Anyone care to estimate fair market value? Thanks, Ron

Ron, have you checked the band adjustments? You didn't say what was all wrong with the tranny but you might get lucky and all it needs are the bands adjusted. Check the archives and type in SOS tranny. If you still have ?'s give Tony Jacobs a buzz on this board as he seems real good on these trannys. I have a 63 4000 SOS that my Dad bought new and it has never has gave any trouble just adjusted the bands every so often. Good luck Greg NE

Ron, Tough question!!, a lot depends upon how serious the SOS is., and the general condition of the tractor. Will get "static" on this, but---I think you would be lucky to get $2000.

Your right Van about the static. Unless the tractor is junk in many aspects A person who knows the SOS transmission, it's many advantages when working properly, can read a service manual, and has just a token bit of mechancial ability, and tools to go with it, wouldn't think twice about giving $2000 for a 4000 Ford SOS. The others would run away from such a deal as fast as they can, and rightly they should. I gave $2600 for a 64 Ford 21315 SOS from one of the other guys. One of the best investments I ever made. Love that tractor. Dan Robertson

hi Ron,
Which half? If only R2,3,4,7,8,10 work, then the Direct Drive clutch isn't applying, or Brake Band 1 isn't releasing. If only R1,1,2,5,6,9 work, then the Direct Drive clutch isn't releasing, or Band 1 isn't applying. The DD clutch and B1 are linked hydraulically to prevent both applying at the same time. Like Greg says, try band adjustment--buy I&T FO-20 shop manual or Ford Service manual 40060090 (best price is from New Holland). If that doesn't do it, the transmission will probably have to be taken apart. If either of the above guesses is correct, parts will cost a whole lot less than the loss you'll take by selling the tractor as is. I agree with Van's $2000 or less estimate, emphasis on the less. Hiring the labor is the price killer on any $4000 tractor with a bad transmission, SOS or standard. Select-O-Speeds are modern, and therefore more complicated, and most people seem to be afraid of them. Nothing wild or wierd inside the case, though.
