Ford 860 wiring

Can someone please help me sort this out? My 860 has been converted to a 12 volt system, I have a 12 volt coil with a built in 3 ohms, a 12 volt 4 post solenoid and a Delco-Remy alternator. The alternator has one Bat post and a two wire connector on top. One of the wires from the top connector goes to the Bat post. From the Bat post there is also a 10 gauge wire going to the "+" Battery cable side of the solenoid, where does the other wire from the top of the alternator go?
Second question, where do the two wires from the ammeter hook up? My key switch has three post, one always hot (goes to the solenoid where the "+" battery cable goes) and apparently two switched post). Thanks

The other wire on the alt goes to the terminal block or key switch; the side that has power only with the key on. You will also need to have a one way diode; Radio Shack part # 1N5408 or 1N4003; in this wire.

The amp gauge gets wired in the 10 ga wire coming from the alt to the starter relay.

The one way diode would allow flow to the alternator? In other words is there a correct way to mount it? Also, if I am looking at the diagram correctly where I am currently going from the Batt post on the alternator to the "+" side of the relay I should change that to go from the Alternator post to the ammeter and from the ammeter to the "+" side of the relay....correct? Thanks

Yes the one way diode allows current flow to the alt but does not allow flow back to the wiring system. With out the diode you would not be able to shut down the tractor because the alt would power the coil with the key off.

The diode must be hooked up the correct way. The cathode end goes toward the alternator. This end is usually marked in some way such as a white band. You can test it by hooking it up and turning on the key with the motor off. If you have power on both sides it is hooked up correctly. If not turn it around

Yes the amp gauge is wired in the 10 gauge wire. From battery post on the alt to one side of the gauge. From other side of the gauge to the hot side of starter relay. If it reads discharge but is actually charging you have the gauge backwards. Swap the wires on the back of the gauge.

WARNING; Amp gauges do not work well on these tractors. They use little power because there is no radio; power windows and such; so the gauge may only move a slight amount. If you do not have the gauge yet you may want to consider getting a volt gauge instead. Look at the wiring diagram for wiring a volt gauge because it is hooked up differant than a amp gauge.

John, one final question and thanks for all your help. Went to Radio Shack and the largest diode they had was a 1n5404 good for 600 volts, the 1n5408 is rated for 1000 volts, is the 1n5404 okay?

Sorry I do not. I only have wiring info on 1954 to 1964 tractors only.

Ok thanks. You are a great source of info on this site. I always read your posts! Thanks! One more question. My 860 runs great but if Iam on a slope leaning towards the genny side of the tractor I get a little runoff of oil from somewhere on the rear top of the engine. Is the head gasket dried out? What else would cause this?

I would not think that a head gasket would be the first thing I would look at for a oil leak. In fact it would be the last.

A leak from the top of the engine while on a slope is most likely the valve cover gasket.

my 860 had the same type oil leak and I found it to be the connection at the gauge, it was slow and dripping down under the cowling and would run off when the tractor leaned
